Pesticide residue is defined by the World Health Organization as “any substance or mixture of substances in food for man or animals resulting from the use of a pesticide and includes any specified derivatives, such as degradation and conversion products, metabolites, reaction products, and impurities that are considered to be of toxicological significance.” One of the foundational elements of Earthmade foods to grow crops with ZERO residues.
A new study concluded by the FDA has reported that 59% of US foods tested contained pesticide residue. That may seem like a lot or a little depending on your perspective, but perhaps the most interesting line in the study is this: “The FDA, along with other government agencies, say that pesticide residues in food are generally not considered a human health risk, unless they rise to certain “maximum residue limits” (MRL)s set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for each pesticide used in food production.” At Earthmade, we dig a little deeper… are any artificial chemicals used to grow food “not a health risk?”
Andre Leu – International Director at Regeneration International – points out, “There is no peer-reviewed scientific evidence that any levels of pesticides are safe for people. There are thousands of studies showing the harm small levels do to people, especially children.” This is quite a different statement from what is listed in the FDA’s report. The overall takeaway is this: do your research, and pay attention to where your food is coming from. At Earthmade, we believe that the best way to protect our health is consuming ZERO chemicals.
